Flooring Types and Comparison
1
Laminate
Laminate flooring consists of multiple layers of synthetic materials fused together through a lamination process. Typically, it includes a high-density fiberboard (HDF) core, a printed photographic layer that simulates the appearance of wood, stone, or other materials, and a protective wear layer on top.
2
SPC
SPC flooring is made from a mixture of natural limestone powder, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and stabilizers. This combination creates a highly durable and rigid core.
3
Engineered wood
Engineered wood flooring is composed of multiple layers of real wood veneer bonded together with adhesives. The top layer is typically a thin layer of hardwood, while the core layers are made of plywood or high-density fiberboard (HDF).
Comparison
Durability
Laminate flooring is generally resistant to scratches, fading, and stains. However, it can be susceptible to moisture damage if exposed to excessive water.SPC flooring is made from a mixture of natural limestone powder, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and stabilizers. This combination creates a highly durable and rigid core.Engineered wood flooring is composed of multiple layers of real wood veneer bonded together with adhesives. The top layer is typically a thin layer of hardwood, while the core layers are made of plywood or high-density fiberboard (HDF).
Installation
Laminate flooring is often designed with a click-lock installation system, making it relatively easy to install as a floating floor without the need for adhesives.Like laminate flooring, SPC flooring often features a click-lock installation system, allowing for easy floating floor installation. Engineered wood flooring can be installed using various methods, including nail-down, glue-down, or floating installations, depending on the specific product and subfloor conditions. Installation with laminate and SPC is simpler than engineered wood.
Cost
Laminate flooring is typically more affordable than engineered wood flooring but may vary depending on the quality and brand. It usually starts about $2.5/sqt in Orange County area. SPC is the most budget friendly material due to the new technology in SPC materials. SPC can be as low as $1.9/sqt. Engineered wood flooring is often more expensive than laminate and SPC flooring due to the use of real wood veneer. It starts at around $4.5/sqt. The cost of installation is the same with laminate and SPC, but much higher with engineered wood.
How to DIY: Replace Old Carpet with New Flooring
01
Remove carpet
Starting in a corner of the room, use a utility knife to make a cut along the edge of the carpet, about 6 inches away from the wall. After we pull the carpet out, you'll see tack strips under the old carpet, along the edge of the room. Carefully take them out with a pry bar and hammer. If there's carpet padding underneath, you'll need to remove it as well. Clean the subfloor or repair demanded floor for next step.
03
Flooring Installation
Start with a corner of the room and lay the first row of flooring with the tongue side facing the wall. For click-and-lock flooring panels, interlock the boards by angling the tongue into the groove of the previous row and then pressing down. For hardwood, use a flooring nailer to secure the planks to the subfloor. While laying down the panels, ensure each row is tightly connected to the previous one. Stagger the end joints of adjacent rows to create a more stable and visually appealing floor.
02
Lay Underlayment
(Optional): Some types of flooring, like laminate or vinyl, may require an underlayment for moisture protection, sound insulation, or cushioning. Whether you need underlayment depends on the subfloor type and the flooring material you choose.
04
Add Floor Divider and Baseboards
If transitioning between different types of flooring or rooms, install transition strips to cover the gap. Glue baseboards or trim to cover expansion gaps around the perimeter of the room. Clean up any dust and admire your newly installed floor!
